Join “It’s About Time” festival curator Steven Schick for a discussion of the legacy of African-American composer Charles Mingus and his historic Tijuana Moods album. One of the most important composers in jazz history, Mingus documented his lively impressions of Tijuana in this rarely performed suite. Moderated by Grammy-winning jazz author Ashley Kahn, the program will feature eminent alto saxophonist Charles McPherson, a longstanding member of Charles Mingus’ band; and Anthony Davis, UC San Diego professor of music and noted composer, pianist and improviser. Presented in association with performances of Tijuana Moods at Tijuana’s CECUT (Jan 21) and Athenaeum Jazz at TSRI (Jan 22)
