July is Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month in California – Walk @ O'Farrell Charter School
Jul 27 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

In 2018 DST-San Diego Alumnae Chapters Program Planning & Development and Social Action, in collaboration with Assembly member Dr. Shirley Weber co-authored Resolution: July is Uterine Fibroids Awareness Month in California.

This event came after the sorority hosted an informative health forum titled: “Uterine Fibroids – The Silent Fight”, where an esteemed panel of DST professionals educated the community on symptoms for early detection, dietary implications, surgery options, the psychological experience, and the disparities surrounding African American women who are largely the highest growing group of women with the diagnosis.

What are Uterine Fibroids: Uterine fibroids are the most common noncancerous tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus (womb) in women of childbearing age with no scientific confirmation on what causes the tumors. Roughly 20 percent – 80 percent of women develop fibroids by age 50. Risk factors include being African-American and or being overweight. The symptoms of fibroids include but are not limited to – heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods; reproductive problems, such as infertility, multiple miscarriages, or early labor (Common Reproductive Health Concerns for Women. (2016, November 29). Division of Reproductive Health – CDC. Retrieved from: https://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/womensrh/healthconcerns.html.).

We hope that you will join us as we host our first Walk/Press Conference in honor of passing the Resolution!
