Afrikan Presence in Latin America by Dr Runoko Rashidi @ World Beat Center
Oct 5 @ 7:30 pm

WorldBeat Cultural Center would like to invite you to WorldBeat Cultural Center on October 5th to see Dr Runoko Rashidi‘s presentation on “The African Presence in Latin America”.
It’s time we acknowledge the stories that have not been told. Our communities need to know that African history began before the Atlantic Slave Trade. In fact Africans we’re sailing and trading long before that and there is a rich Olmec history that tells us they were in the Americas. Our communities also need to know that there still is a strong Black presence throughout Mexico, Central and South America. Dr. Runoko Rashidi will go over some of his most recent visits to the Black communities in Peru, Chile, Panama and Colombia as well as his research on Olmec history. Recently in June of 2019, Makeda Cheatom, our Executive Director along with Dr Runoko Rashidi were invited to take part in Lima’s Afro-Peruvian Culture Month guest lecture series.
The lecture is free and the program will begin at 7:30pm. Please see the attached
flyer for more details and if you have any questions, please feel free
to contact me at 619-230-1190 or email me back.

Runoko Rashidi is an anthropologist and historian with a main focus on
Global African Presence, which covers Africans outside of Africa
before and after enslavement. He is also the author or editor of
eighteen books which deal with the same topic. Dr. Runoko has visited
120 countries and spoken in sixty-five countries. In 2005, he was
awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree by the Amen-Ra Theological
Seminary. He inaugurated the First All-India Dalit Writer’s Conference
in 1987, and he was the major keynote speaker at the International
Reunion of the African Family in 1999 and first keynote speaker at the
Frist Global Black Nationalities Conference in Osogbo, Nigeria in
2010. In December 2010, he was President and first speaker at the
Diaspora Forum at the FESMAN Conference.  He is currently pursuing a
major work on the African presence in the museums of the world. His
ultimate goal in his life is the uplift of African people from all
over the world. He is the official Traveling Ambassador for Marcus
Garvey’s Universal Negro Improvement Association and African
Communicates League.

Tariq Khamisa Foundation is dedicated to teaching and inspiring peace, hope, and forgiveness in youth and setting them on a path towards opportunity. With the goal of creating safer schools and communities, our character-building programs teach children the principles of accountability, compassion, forgiveness, and peacemaking. The programs and curricula TKF provides instills hope for those vulnerable due to exposure to violence, crime, harm, and poverty. TKF was founded in 1995, after college student Tariq Khamisa was killed by a 14-year-old gang member, Tony Hicks. Tony was tried as an adult and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Tariq’s father, Azim Khamisa, felt this tragedy created victims on both ends of the gun. Azim, in an act of extraordinary grace and forgiveness, reached out to Tony’s grandfather, Ples Felix. The two men came together in the spirit of healing to end youth violence.

Laura Sheppard is a solo practitioner in her tenth year as a member of the California Bar. After studying at USD School of Law and interning with the San Diego Public Defender’s Office, she opened her own practice during the recession of 2009. She has practiced trial level and post-conviction criminal defense, including writs, appeals, and parole hearings. Her primary practice area is assisting lifers in California state prisons to earn their freedom through the parole process. She has successfully helped several LWOP inmates earn a commutation from the Governor and then their freedom from the parole board. She also treasures the occasions when she can help an offender engage in restorative justice with their victim. She works and lives in the diverse immigrant community of City Heights. Her other vocations include making an impact on criminal justice policy, making art and supporting other artists, umpiring youth baseball, and building the next generation of lawyers by providing internships to law students and judging moot court and mock trial. She also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in theater arts from Gonzaga University, and has taken courses from the National Criminal Defense College and Mental Health First Aid USA.

Jones-Wright is a volunteer attorney with the California Innocence Project, 2nd Vice President of the San Diego branch of the NAACP, and Vice President of the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association. She earned her B.A. in mass media communications from the University of San Francisco, J.D. from Howard University School of Law, and LL.M. in trial advocacy specializing in federal criminal defense from California Western School of Law. A native San Diegan, Geneviéve grew up and lives in the Southeast San Diego community.
