Interview with international award-winning novelist Nnedi Okorafor and Dr. Dean Nelson.

Nnedi Okorafor is an international award-winning novelist of African-based science fiction, fantasy and magical realism. Born in the United States to two Nigerian immigrant parents, Okorafor is known for weaving African culture into creative evocative settings and memorable characters. In a profile of Okorafor’s work titled, “Weapons of Mass Creation,” The New York Times called Okorafor’s imagination “stunning.”

Her works include Who Fears Death (currently being developed by HBO into a TV series), the Binti novella trilogy, the Book of Phoenix, the Akata books and Lagoon. She is the winner of Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy and Locus Awards and her debut novel Zahrah the Windseeker won the prestigious Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature.

Okorafor has also written comics for Marvel, including Black Panther: Long Live the King and Wakanda Forever, which features the Dora Milaje and the unlimited series Shuri. Her first graphic novel LaGuardia will be released in 2019 as a comic book series.

On behalf of Thermo Fisher Scientific’s African Heritage Employee Resource Group’s (AHERG) we would like to invite your student organization to our 3rd Annual Black History Month Symposium Event.
We are hosting this opportunity for future STEM leaders, to tour our Fortune 500 facility in Carlsbad, California; giving you a first-hand look at the day-to-day operations of one of the leading Biotechnology companies in the world. Understanding that one of the most difficult questions a college student will faced after graduation is, “what’s next?” Through proper planning and persistence, the question becomes easier and more pleasant to answer.
Thermo Fisher’s AHERG seeks to assist students in building the network that will aid in the transition from student to working professional.

Candlelight Yoga (Relax & Restore) @ Martin Luther King Junior Memorial Park

This 60 minute class seeks to help you achieve physical, mental, and emotional relaxation through gentle Hatha Yoga.
Enjoy this Candlelight class to relax, unwind, and relieve tension in the body, heart, and mind. A nourishing way to end the day! This class is suitable for all levels/includes adjustments. Modifications for injuries/only gentle inversions will be offered.
Poses are held for 3 – 6 breaths releasing tight muscles and bringing awareness with aromatherapy, soothing music, and candlelight. Each class in this series will be built around helping yogis find their truest selves.

**Purchase a $27 game ticket for yourself and your guests (including family/friends who are NOT dancing) from listed instructors or by using the link below by Thursday, February 14th. (This is the only way to avoid additional fees)

**Learn the dance routine to be performed which will be shared with all of the instructors listed below. They will be teaching it in their classes beginning next week. There will NOT be pre-event group rehearsal. Feel free to schedule your own rehearsals with other dancers in your area so you can OWN IT on the dancefloor!

**Wear solid black bottoms and any combination of Purple, Pink or Green colored top.

**Arrive at the venue at 5 PM to check in. We are a part of the PRE-GAME entertainment!

Jack and Jill Incorporated of San Diego is holding a community forum during Black History month entitled Black Excellence in Public Service: Serving and Protecting our Children. The panel discussion will be moderated by our very own San Diego Chapter President, Pamela Gray Payton and will provide space for a conversation from a diverse panel about the different ways one can serve their community and improve the lives of our children. Times are very different now for this generation of children so join in on the discussion that’s sure to empower us all.

There will also be time reserved for Q&A from the audience. Confirmed panelists include San Diego City Councilmember Monica Montgomery, La Mesa City Councilmember Dr. Akilah Weber, and other community leaders in the San Diego region. See the the attached flyer for full list of panelists.
