The Afrofuturism Lounge is the first of its kind and back again for another round; Part After Party, Part Black Artists Showcase. Proceeds from this event will benefit DETOUR (Depositing Empowerment Through Outreach & Urban Redevelopment). DETOUR is a mentoring program for girls of color whose mission is to increase access to education and employment opportunities for girls through our Focused And Naturally Confident Youth (F.A.N.C.Y.) Leadership programs (Expo, Leadership Academy, and Ambassador Internships). Our message is it is never too late to reposition yourself to passionately seek and fulfill your purpose! This ties in perfectly with the Afrofuturism and the principle of Sankofa. It’s never too late to go back and fix it.

After being overwhelmed last year by the level of support and demand for this event, we have moved to a more accessible venue to better accommodate you. We prevail upon you for patience and grace as we assure you we have taken into consideration all of our lessons learned from last year so that the lounge can be even better the 2nd time around.

Black History In Motion 2020 @ Golden Hall
Feb 6 @ 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm

The San Diego City Black Employees Association, in collaboration with Jas:Maven, will be hosting a Black History in Motion celebration to commemorate Black History’s multi-generational, forward progress throughout the City of San Diego.

The focus of this celebration is Past and Present San Diego Black History shown through an exhibit of artifacts, black-owned business owners, a presentation by elected officials, and entertainment.

“There has always been a rich and deep African American background here in downtown San Diego. It was known as the Harlem of the West in the 1920s through 1940s.”

Please join us at this year’s celebration as we feature Professor Chuck Ambers of the African Latin Museum in Old Town, Councilmember Monica Montgomery, and other local leaders.
