TONGUES UNTIED: 30th Anniversary Screening @ Central Library (Neil Morgan Auditorium)
Oct 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join us for a 30th anniversary screening of the ground-breaking film Tongues Untied by late filmmaker Marlon Riggs. Cornelius Moore, California Newsreel co-director and colleague of Riggs’ who was involved in the film’s production and appeared in the cast will lead the discussion after the film.

Made to “shatter this nation’s brutalizing silence on matters of sexual and racial difference”, this bold and beautiful film combines poetry, performance, and music into a personal and universal statement on the experiences and resulting persecution of Black gay men. Met with a storm of controversy that reached all the way to Congress, Tongues Untied remains a radical act of representation.

Registration encouraged for this program. Please scroll down.

An artist of extraordinary courage and vision, Marlon Riggs gave cinematic voice to gay Black men at a time in America when to be either was to be denied one’s full humanity. Defying the culture of silence and shame that pervaded the era of the AIDS crisis, Riggs created a vibrantly expressive and innovative film that brought the richness of the queer Black experience to the screen. His Emmy winning 1987 classic documentary film Ethnic Notions remains the definitive work examining anti-Black stereotypes permeating popular culture and is a mainstay in college and high school screenings and discussions on race.

Film curator and programmer Cornelius Moore co-directs California Newsreel, a non-profit, social issue film distribution and production company. California Newsreel distributes films on Black life and history, race, Africa, health, and the complete works of Marlon Riggs. Moore was the executor of Riggs’ estate.

Presented in conjunction with the 2019 One Book One San Diego selection The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai.

Parking is underground and free with 2-hour validation. The Central Library is one block from the Park & Market stop on the Trolley Blue and Orange lines.  Bus routes 11 stops right in front of the library.

The Black Aesthetic 1971 – 2019 @ Valencia Park/Malcolm X Library
Oct 19 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

This interview and public forum discusses the progress of society and black art in relation to The Black Aesthetic, first published in 1971.

The Black Aesthetic was a seminal texts that was composed of a series of essays from the most prominent black writers, musicians, artists and poets. It included definitions and explorations of what black art was and was becoming with lengthy critiques on society, racism and art as a whole. Many of the artists I have chosen to interview from this series were training or working at the time of The Black Aesthetic’s publication and were influenced by its contributors in their own professional careers. Others are younger artists who are now grappling with many of the same issues from 1971. As many of these issues have been exacerbated rather than striated; What, if anything, is the black aesthetic of 2019?

This work is the foundation of my practice as a storyteller and historian. Much of my work involves oral history, generational knowledge and trauma and public participation.

This project is a multi generational community building exercise. It is to understand the progress for Black people in America through both the arts and society in general. Though the intent is to support and unite black artists I hope to build and foster a larger community that supports all artists of color. I hope this project can offer a historical analysis of how black artists have traditionally collaborated and created work as well as create a space to work as the next generation takes on these problems.
