How are you supporting Girls of Color? Join us to share your knowledge and get involved in the All About Girls of Color Initiative!
As a community leader and major stakeholder invested in the well-being of Girls of Color – please accept this invitation to join us as we host our first Community Conversation with a group of individuals doing amazing work within their sector to move the needle towards positive outcomes for Girls of Color.
Our goal through facilitating a “community conversation” with key stakeholders who are passionate about the well-being of Girls Of Color – youth, parents, educators, nonprofit service providers, community partners, and employers – is to solicit your input on what is working well, what is not working, to identify unfulfilled needs, and to think creatively about new opportunities for programming, partnership and collaboration.
This event will be hosted by:
Tinesia Conwright, Founder & Executive Director, DETOUR/FANCY Teen Girls Expo & Leadership Academy (www.detourempowers.org)
All About Girls of Color Initiative
The All About Girls of Color Initiative unites individuals passionate about youth equity and inclusion to reduce the exclusionary practices and marginalization of girls of color by providing training on current trends impacting them and evidence-based practices for supporting and engaging girls of color around these trends.
Elephant Talks are about addressing the “elephant” in the room. We tackle important and sometimes difficult equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) topics that far too oftalt=”” width=”686″ height=”960″ class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-6894″ />lved the hope is to come to new levels of understanding and compassion. We are all knowledge holders and through deep, meaningful, guided dialogue we can collectively start to change perspectives, hearts, and minds.
This Month’s Topic: GENTRIFICATION
Gentrification is a process of changing the character of a neighborhood through the influx of more affluent residents and businesses. This is a common and controversial topic in politics and in urban planning. Some see this as fixing a problem while others see it as creating a problem. Voicing your concerns and listening to other’s perspectives at this Elephant Talk provides an excellent opportunity to come up with solutions that revitalize communities without pushing the existing people.

Maharani Peace Hall is a Community Activist/Organizer and an Advocate for Social Justice. Her bio reads:

She has spent the last several years attempting to draw attention to issues revolving around Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). Throughout the years Maharani has had a range of experiences that have led her to want to create, host, and facilitate “Elephant Talks” in an effort to address, unpack, and hopefully start positively changing some of the major topics that impede our humanity. Her sincerest hope is to create a safe yet brave space where conversations can lead to actionable solutions which can take root in the hearts and minds of many so we can literally be the change we want to see in the world.

Carrol Waymon, educator and champion of racial equality, 1925-2020
Please come and pay respects to this San Diego legend!
A viewing will be held 5 p.m. Jan. 23 at Anderson-Ragsdale Funeral Home, 5050 Federal Blvd., San Diego.
A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Jan. 24 at Bethel Baptist Church, 1962 Euclid Ave., San Diego.
“To be Black in San Diego,” Waymon wrote in “On Being Black in San Diego — Anytown USA,” his 2004 book, “is to forever wonder why, on the one hand, this is such a great place to live, and on the other hand feel so isolated and depressed at the same time. Why is it that so many Blacks in all walks and successful levels in this town feel that so few things have brought so little positive change?”
A lifelong jazz aficionado, Waymon spent decades on the Jackie Robinson YMCA board, volunteered with Somali Youth United, and late in life became co-owner of Awash, an Ethiopian restaurant in San Diego. Among his numerous honors was the KPBS “Local Hero” award and the Jackie Robinson YMCA’s Human Dignity Award, both bestowed in 2013
After earning a Ph.D in education, Waymon founded what is now known as the Africana Studies Department at San Diego State University. In 1977, he began a 33-year association with Mesa College, teaching psychology, sociology and anthropology.
The UNCF San Diego campaign in collaboration with the HBCU Alumni of San Diego, as part of UNCF Los Angeles, is pleased to co-host HBCU Weekend. The weekend’s events are comprised of the UNCF Gala on Friday, January 24, followed by the HBCU Expo for college aspiring junior high and high school students and their families at the Jacobs Center on Saturday, January 25.
