Jack and Jill Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead @ Pepper Canyon Hall (room 109)
Oct 21 @ 8:00 am – 1:30 pm

he IDEA Student Center, The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the North San Diego County Jack and Jill Foundation hosts a full day program for underrepresented 3rd-12 grade students to be exposed to a range of fun and engaging learning activities related to engineering and technology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014, African-Americans represented only 5.5% of the country’s engineering workforce. Our commitment is to increase the number of all historically underrepresented students in the field of S.T.E.A.M (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Mathematics), especially African American students and expose African American students and their parents/families to UC San Diego and the overall process of pursuing higher education.

Mosaics II: Dueling Identities @ Skyline Hills Library
Apr 7 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

To live with DUELING IDENTITIES is to be an expert in code switching. We define code switching as the toning down, hiding, adjusting, or erasure of certain aspects of one’s personal identity in order to be accepted in different social settings. Code switching is very common. We often change how we behave or speak because what is deemed “appropriate” or “acceptable” often differs in our homes, communities, and the outside world. Frequent code switching commonly leads to feeling “not enough,” because we do not fully fit into the different spaces we often find ourselves in.

MOSAICS aims to answer the following questions: When do you engage in code switching? Who taught you how? And more importantly how does it make you feel?

A range of performing and visual artists will take us on their journey of code switching. Attendees will enjoy an hour-long performance, displayed art, engage in a Q&A session with participating artists, craft an item or two, and reflect on their own experience with code switching through interactive questions posted throughout the venue. This is a free-flowing event, children are welcomed, and seating is optional 🙂
