Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. King, both a Baptist minister and civil-rights activist, had a seismic impact on race relations in the United States, beginning in the mid-1950s. Among many efforts, King headed the SCLC. Through his activism, he played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American citizens in the South and other areas of the nation, as well as the creation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, among several other honors. King was assassinated in April 1968, and continues to be remembered as one of the most lauded African-American leaders in history.

Join us for the 2018-19 FANCY Leadership Academy Parent & Student Orientation!
We are ready to kick off a new year! Meet us at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center meeting room on Sunday, August 19th from 2:00pm-3:00pm! We will discuss our upcoming program calendar, activities, and answer all questions you may have.
A spinoff from the F.A.N.C.Y. Teen Girls Expo, this youth development program allows us to work with teen girls throughout the year to provide Leadership Development, fun educational workshops, guidance and assistance towards their success moving forward.
Our goal is to expose them to exciting and interactive activities that allow them to learn, engage, and grow during their time in the Academy. Girls will also have an opportunity to apply to work as a F.A.N.C.Y. Ambassador, gaining job experience while encouraging their peers to join the program and working in the community as leaders.
Please complete the Leadership Academy interest form online at http://detourempowers.org/leadership-academy/ before August 13th.
Once that is completed – you will receive an official Leadership Academy application.
For additional info we can be reached at (619)750-1180 or detourempowers@gmail.com.
We are looking forward to seeing you there!
