Flexin’ My Expression V @ Porter's Pub UCSD
Nov 4 @ 8:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Flexin’ My Expression was created as a way for students in the UC San Diego community to have a platform to express themselves, destress from the UC San Diego environment, witness the talent of their peers, and connect to the Greater San Diego Poetry Community. It was started November 21, 2015 by Kyler Nathan and Cambria Anderson, two interns at UC San Diego’s Black Resource Center and will be carried on by Jzov Stith Gambles, a current intern at the Black Resource Center, and Aliaya White.

We are excited to announce the fifth installment of Flexin’ My Expression!

Come experience the power of poetry and community!

SELF-LOVE DAY 2018

Do you need more “me time”? Are you looking for a fun way to treat yourself this Vday? Join us Sunday, February 11, 2018 from 2-5pm for an afternoon of SELF-LOVE and VINO VINYASA (translation…wine and yoga!!).

Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at the tranquil and serene Roots Up Yoga Flow studio as we sip wine & do “gentle flow” yoga. We always make time to “share our stories” as we connect and heal, and feature a local business owner.

Lots of healing activities for your mind, body and spirit:

* Toast yourself (!) and have a “Self Love Libation”– your choice of Signature SISTERcircle Mimosa or healthy delicious smoothie.
* Participate in a guided yoga session with certified yoga instructor, and owner of Roots Up Yoga Flow, Debra Brooks.
*In the “Visual Love Corner”, paint peaceful healing art to take home with you, guided by gifted painter and muralist Kim Phillips; Learn to tie waist beads (the ultimate self-love gift that keeps on giving, 24/7/365), and get your own pair from the Motherland (!); while supplies last, visual art available for $10 per piece.
*Hear about our inaugural SISTERcircle Global Black Women’s Conference and community luncheon held November 2017 in GHANA; sign up to join the 2019 trip to Ghana.
*Enjoy positive vibes with positive people and love yo’ self!

TICKETS:

Funk Soul Social @ The Music Box
Mar 24 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm

The infamous Funk Soul Social returns with a very special edition that is sure to revive those old school feels featuring Rap legend Sir Mix-A-Lot known for hits like “Baby Got Back,” “Posse’ on Broadway” and many others. The night also welcomes the Funk and Soul vibes of special guests Kim Jackson and The Routine Players and Hip-Hop R&B sounds of The Lyrical Groove.

Tickets: $25 Advanced/Day of Show
Doors/Show- 8:00/9:30pm
Ages: 21+

Sir Mix-A-Lot (sirmixalot) parlayed a gonzo tribute to women with large buttocks into hip-hop immortality. But even before he struck crossover gold, he was one of rap’s great D.I.Y. success stories. The Grammy award-winning emcee co-founded his own record label, promoted his music himself, produced all his own tracks, and essentially pulled himself up by the proverbial American bootstraps. Even before “Baby Got Back,” Mix-A-Lot was a platinum-selling album artist with a strong following in the hip-hop community, known for bouncy, danceable, bass-heavy tracks indebted to old school electro.Image may contain: 1 person, text

Mosaics II: Dueling Identities @ Skyline Hills Library
Apr 7 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

To live with DUELING IDENTITIES is to be an expert in code switching. We define code switching as the toning down, hiding, adjusting, or erasure of certain aspects of one’s personal identity in order to be accepted in different social settings. Code switching is very common. We often change how we behave or speak because what is deemed “appropriate” or “acceptable” often differs in our homes, communities, and the outside world. Frequent code switching commonly leads to feeling “not enough,” because we do not fully fit into the different spaces we often find ourselves in.

MOSAICS aims to answer the following questions: When do you engage in code switching? Who taught you how? And more importantly how does it make you feel?

A range of performing and visual artists will take us on their journey of code switching. Attendees will enjoy an hour-long performance, displayed art, engage in a Q&A session with participating artists, craft an item or two, and reflect on their own experience with code switching through interactive questions posted throughout the venue. This is a free-flowing event, children are welcomed, and seating is optional 🙂
