This week we will discuss Religions vs. Spirituality. The writings of the Prophet Nen Naba, Dogon High Priest will be discussed to provide a “black-owned perspective” to this controversial topic.

Building alternative neighborhood-based food systems require a social commitment to racial equity and a fearless commitment to social justice. The intent of the PNV Food Justice Legacy Lecture Series is to convene opportunities for shared experiences and provide intellectual inspiration to communities most impacted by inequitable practices.

Dr. Maulana Karenga, an accomplished activist scholar, the creator of Kwanzaa, an African America cultural holiday, and published author, will deliver the keynote address on Racism as a Root Cause for Inequities within the US Food System and Society as a Whole.

Following the lecture, there will be a response panel and conversation with the audience. Confirmed panelists at this time, Lianne Urada, PhD, MSW, LCSW, Assistant Professor, San Diego State University School of Social Work & University of California San Diego, Center on Gender Equity and Health, Division of Infectious Diseases & Global Public Health, Department of Medicine; and Jessie Mills PhD, Chair and Associate Professor, Ethnic Studies, University of San Diego. The program also includes dinner at 5:30pm and cultural performances.

The infamous Funk Soul Social returns with a very special edition that is sure to revive those old school feels featuring Rap legend Sir Mix-A-Lot known for hits like “Baby Got Back,” “Posse’ on Broadway” and many others. Sir Mix-A-Lot (sirmixalot) parlayed a gonzo tribute to women with large buttocks into hip-hop immortality. But even before he struck crossover gold, he was one of rap’s great D.I.Y. success stories. The Grammy award-winning emcee co-founded his own record label, promoted his music himself, produced all his own tracks, and essentially pulled himself up by the proverbial American bootstraps. Even before “Baby Got Back,” Mix-A-Lot was a platinum-selling album artist with a strong following in the hip-hop community, known for bouncy, danceable, bass-heavy tracks indebted to old school electro.

The San Diego African Culture Fest (SDACF) provides the community with a sense of identity and pride, simultaneously exposing all San Deigns to new perspectives regarding the diversity of African culture, heritage and trends.

This year’s Reunion is a three-day celebration, held from 8/10 – 8/12 2018 at The World Beat Cultural Center in San Diego. Our first day is dedicated to Real Hip Hop. Return of the Gods of Hip Hop that is. Hosted by Lord Jamar of Brand Nubians, we will have live performances by Soulflower Amn, Herb Alkhemyst, Hassan N’ Prodigy, and more. Honorees include Saroc the MC, BDOT, Public Enemy’s Professor Griff and The Brand Nubians! The night will be filled with graffiti, beat-boxing, break dancing, off the top rhyming battles and more! There will also be a hip-hop fashion show as well as tributes made to 2Pac and D.J Kool Herc, the Godfather of Hip Hop.

The Main Event will be Held on Saturday 8/11/18, hosted by actor & comedian Michael Colyar & Mama Funshine a.k.a I Love You Fun! Headline performers include Ayanna Gregory, daughter of the honorable/legendary, late, Dick Gregory, Sa Roc The MC, The Conscious Battle Rapper BDOT, Kiyoshi, Emcee & Yogini Sole.This years honorees include; world-renowned Healer & Author Queen Afua for her contribution to the World of Natural Health, researcher and lecturer Michael Imhotep of the African History Network, for his diligence to educating and uplifting African people around the world, Chef Ahki for knowledge of healing through electric foods, and Kaba Hiawatha( formerly known as Booker T. Coleman) for his dedication to liberating the minds with unquestionable truth of our history.
