National Economic Association 50th Anniversary Luncheon @ Marina Kitchen - San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina, Marina Ballroom G
Jan 4 @ 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

On January 4, 2020, the National Economic Association (NEA) will celebrate its 50th anniversary at a luncheon from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
About this Event
The NEA was founded in 1969 as the Caucus of Black Economists to promote the professional lives of minorities within the profession. In addition to continuing its founding mission, the organization is particularly interested in producing and distributing knowledge of economic issues that are of exceptional interest to promoting economic growth among native and immigrant African Americans, Latinos, and other people of color.

Over the years, NEA has honored several distinguished African American economists through the Samuel Z. Westerfield Award for an exemplary record of scholarship, teaching, and public service. Through the Rhonda M. Williams Doctoral Dissertation Award, the NEA has recognized outstanding doctoral dissertations written by African-American candidates of color- writing on economic, public policy, or political topics related to the NEA mission. Under the Sir Arthur Lewis Memorial Lecture, the NEA has recognized an economist who has produced seminal research on economic development or made a significant contribution to economic development or international trade.

In addition to recognizing scholarly contributions, the NEA recognizes members who have performed exceptional service to the organization through the Alfred Edwards Award for Service to the National Economic Association. At this anniversary, we will be honoring our founding members.

The Black Tax – The Cost of Being Black in America
Dec 9 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Discover the hidden cost of being Black in America.

In this highly acclaimed book, The Black Tax, Shawn Rochester shows how The Black Tax (which is the financial cost of conscious and unconscious anti-black discrimination), creates a massive financial burden on Black American households that dramatically reduces their ability to leave a substantial legacy for future generations. Los Angeles Black Professionals is honored to host Mr. Rochester for a presentation & discussion about The Black Tax and what can be done about it. Mr. Rochester will deliver the following:

Explain the concept of The Black Tax in a paradigm-shifting, data-driven, and fact-based manner.

Quantify the historical cost of discrimination against Black people in America and explain how that led to Black people owning only about 2% of US wealth.

Introduce a new economic framework to help create the millions of jobs and businesses that are missing in the Black community.
