Celebrating Equity & Visionary Leaders @ United Domestic Workers Community Hall
Sep 19 @ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

This year, we had the honor of graduating the fourth cohort of our Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute and the 14th class of our Students for Economic Justice Fellowship.

Over the course of six months, 13 community leaders expanded their skills to serve on commissions and seven students learned and practiced organizing skills in on-the-ground organizing campaigns led by local labor and community partners.

Now it’s time to celebrate these visionary leaders!

We invite you to join us—and City of San Diego Councilmember Monica Montgomery—to recognize their achievements and celebrate our growing community of leaders and organizers working to create a more equitable San Diego region.

Black History In Motion 2020 @ Golden Hall
Feb 6 @ 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm

The San Diego City Black Employees Association, in collaboration with Jas:Maven, will be hosting a Black History in Motion celebration to commemorate Black History’s multi-generational, forward progress throughout the City of San Diego.

The focus of this celebration is Past and Present San Diego Black History shown through an exhibit of artifacts, black-owned business owners, a presentation by elected officials, and entertainment.

“There has always been a rich and deep African American background here in downtown San Diego. It was known as the Harlem of the West in the 1920s through 1940s.”

Please join us at this year’s celebration as we feature Professor Chuck Ambers of the African Latin Museum in Old Town, Councilmember Monica Montgomery, and other local leaders.

You are personally invited to join us in discussing Toni Morrison’s book The Bluest Eye at the Reading as Activism Bookclub. Here is a brief description of the book from Goodreads. “The Bluest Eye is Toni Morrison’s first novel, a book heralded for its richness of language and boldness of vision. Set in the author’s girlhood hometown of Lorain, Ohio, it tells the story of black, eleven-year-old Pecola Breedlove. Pecola prays for her eyes to turn blue so that she will be as beautiful and beloved as all the blond, blue-eyed children in America. In the autumn of 1941, the year the marigolds in the Breedloves’ garden do not bloom. Pecola’s life does change- in painful, devastating ways.
What its vivid evocation of the fear and loneliness at the heart of a child’s yearning, and the tragedy of its fulfillment. The Bluest Eye remains one of Toni Morrisons’s most powerful, unforgettable novels- and a significant work of American fiction.”
We would love for you to join us on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. via Zoom. We will have discussion questions. However, please feel free to come with a few questions and discussion points as well.
